Waynesburg set to begin composting service
WAYNESBURG – Waynesburg Borough always picked up its residents’ grass clippings, leaves and other lawn wastes and, for years, simply dumped the materials at the former borough dump.
The borough now will be making good use of these materials by starting a composting operation at the borough sewage plant.
The borough had a composting operation there in the past but the project was discontinued a number of years ago, borough manager Mike Simms said.
All along, the borough continued to pick up lawn waste and simply took it to the dump. Now, Simms said, “we’ll be making it into something useful.”
Eventually, residents will be able to go to the borough sewage plant to pick up compost for their gardens. The borough has begun collecting the materials for composting but the process of turning it into a useful material takes time, Simms explained.
Residents who want the borough to pick up their lawn waste, including leaves, grass clippings and branches can call the borough.
The borough can only take branches up to 3 inches in diameter, which is the capacity of its wood chipper. Simms said.
The borough normally tries to pick up residents’ yard wastes on Mondays.
“We always assumed people work on their yards over the weekend so we set aside Mondays for picking it up,” he said.
Anyone who wants the borough to pick up their lawn waste can call the borough from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at 724-627-8111.
Once the compost is ready for use, residents will be able to go to the sewage plant on Meadowlark Park Road to pick it up at times sewage plant employees are present, which is normally between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.
