Two men escaped injury when their small, fixed-wing airplane crashed while making an emergency landing Sunday morning at the Greene County Fairgrounds in Franklin Township.

State police in Waynesburg said the pilot, Daniel Dean Smith, 71, of New Freeport, and co-pilot, Paul Henry Dawson, 71, of Greensburg, were operating the airplane when they had to execute the emergency landing about 9:30 a.m. The airplane hit a large tire while landing, causing damage to the landing gear. The airplane came to rest in a grassy area.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
