MONESSEN – A Monessen man was arraigned on charges he attempted to kill a local bar patron by slashing him in the face with a box cutter Friday.

District Judge Joseph Dalfonso released the suspect, Jeffery Hill, on $50,000 unsecured bond Monday in the assault on William Jackson about 6:30 p.m. at Chateau Lounge, court records show.

Monessen police were called to the bar at 134 Donner Ave. to investigate a fight involving a knife in which the victim already fled the scene.

Police said they suspected upon arrival that attempts were made to clean a blood trail. Police discovered the bar owner, Dwayne Murphy, in the kitchen area with a bucket of water and a mop next to him, the affidavit supporting the criminal complaint indicates.

The video surveillance in the bar allowed police to identify Hill, 59, of 309 Second St., as the suspect in the case.

The video showed Hill striking a man and knocking him to the floor before other patrons grabbed Hill in an attempt to stop the fight, the record shows.

It then shows Hill breaking free and striking Jackson as he was attempting to get up. Hill allegedly grabbed an object and hit Jackson with it before cutting Jackson in the face with the box cutter, causing major facial injuries, police stated in the court record.

Hill was removed from the bar and Jackson left the business a short time later.

Jackson was found on Route 906 at 17th Street bleeding profusely from an injury on the right side of his face, police said. Police said Jackson was combative before he was flown by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital. His condition was not immediately known Tuesday.

Hill was charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. Court records indicated he has not yet hired an attorney to represent him the case.

He was scheduled to appear before Dalfonso for a preliminary hearing at 10:45 a.m. July 15.
