WAYNESBURG – The themes for this year’s summer reading programs at Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg will be action and motion.

The programs this year are “On Your Mark, Get Set..Read” for elementary aged children; “Get In The Game” for teenagers and “Exercise Your Mind” for adults.

The library will host its summer reading kick-off from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 25, with various games, crafts and other activities to preview this summer’s action themed programming. Attendees can register during the kick-off for summer reading clubs and story times and receive a book bag of surprises.

The summer reading kick off will feature children’s author, Diana Perry, from the Ohio Valley area. Perry has more than 200 publishing credits including Ohio Valley Parent Magazine, Outdoor Sportsman Magazine, The Mining Gazette newspaper and The Summer Survival Guide for Parents magazine.

Perry will have an interactive session with children at the kick off focusing on her books, “The Weather by Heather,” “The Snake That Could Bake,” and “Andres, The Mighty Maya Warrior.” Copies of Perry’s books will be available for purchase during the festival.

Internationally renowned Ninjitzu master, Joey Nuzum, also will perform at the kick off festival. Nuzum’s productions combine entertainment, education and ancient mystical arts into a spectacular show that will defy logic, science and explanation.

Weekly programming for school-age through adult-age patrons will run for six weeks from July 5 through Aug. 12.

Bowlby’s programming for school-age children will feature a camp-style program running from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays. Each week will feature a different subject: Larger than Life, Fueling Your Engine, Motion Commotion, Sports Fanatic, Mind Benders and Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff.

Following daily activities on Wednesdays will be a Fit for Life session from 3 to 4 p.m., with demonstrations in Hapkido, dance, club cardio, yoga and more for the six weeks of summer programming.

Most importantly, these weekly programs are free to the public and will feature activities designed to keep kids and adults reading, moving and learning during the summer.

Free lunches for any child age 18 or younger will be available on site through a partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Food Bank.

Participants in the summer reading program will also have the opportunity to attend for free the local Washington Wild Things Library Night game slated for Wednesday, Aug. 10. Other family members can purchase game tickets for $8. No transportation is provided.

The library’s annual trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium will be Saturday, Aug. 13. Ticket prices are: ages 2 and younger, free; ages 2 and older, $14. Tickets include admission to the zoo and bus transportation.
