Hair today, yesterday and tomorrow
Temptations Unlimited, a hair and beauty salon, opened in Dry Tavern in the early 1970s. Since that time, quite a number of Greene County residents have sat in its chairs, and so it is no wonder that the women in the current Mystery Photo were so recognizable to Observer-Reporter readers.
We received dozens of emails and phone calls tipping us off, including one from state Rep. Pam Snyder, but none more helpful than one from the salon’s owner, Julia Meese.
“Three of those girls are still stylists in my salon,” Meese wrote, which is “still in full swing after 44 years.”
We called the salon last Wednesday and were able to speak to the three longtime stylists. One of them is Helen DuPont, who was the first to call the newspaper last Monday morning from her Clarksville home.
“My aunt texted me at 6:15 in the morning and said, ‘You’re in the paper.’ I was amazed. It’s kind of awesome, to be with these friends for 28 years.”
Stylist Stephanie DeHaas, who also lives in Clarksville, will be retiring in four weeks after 38 years in the business. What does she plan to do?
“Absolutely nothing,” DeHaas said. “I’m going to take the summer off and catch up on things that never seem to get done, and to travel.”
DeHaas joked that she’d like to take the photo in the newspaper to a plastic surgeon to see if she could look that way again.
We weren’t able to contact the other three women in the picture, but our readers told us Tracy Kolat Holtschneider is still living in the area. She is the sister of Cary Kolat, one of the greatest wrestlers to come out of Pennsylvania.
Meese, who graduated from California University of Pennsylvania with a degree in business, lives in Rices Landing with her husband, Gary. They have a son and granddaughter in Brooklyn, N.Y. She doesn’t recall exactly when the photo was taken but thought it might have been between the time they moved to their present location in 1985 or when a children’s division was added to the business around 1988 or 1989.
If readers are wondering, the color of those very-1980s coats was purple.
Look for another Mystery Photo in next Monday’s Observer-Reporter.
