Canton Township firefighters were called just after 7 p.m. Wednesday to Brookman Iron and Metals, 4 Race St., after a pile of debris caught on fire.

Fire Chief Dave Gump said that a worker was cutting up beams and a spark may have caught the pile on fire. He said there were about 100 tires, gasoline tanks and wire in the debris pile. Gump said he received reports that the smoke could be seen as far away as the intersection of Routes 50 and 18 near Hickory.

He said the state Department of Environmental Protection and Washington County Hazardous Materials Team also were notified.
