A Pittsburgh man faces charges of altering both the inspection and registration stickers on his vehicle after he was stopped last month by a North Strabane Township police officer who noticed the inspection sticker appeared bogus.

The vehicle driven by Paul Harvey Vareberg, 46, was spotted Feb. 18 on McClelland Road at Weaver Lane. Police said it appeared to have a discolored inspection sticker, and the numbers appeared to have been altered. Police stopped the vehicle and could see the date on the inspection sticker had been changed. Police said the registration sticker also had been altered.

Vareberg, who police said does not have a valid license and admitted to not having insurance, reportedly told the officer he has been driving that way for several years. He also allegedly admitted to changing the dates on the stickers with a marker.

Police said they also could smell marijuana, and Vareberg admitted to having it in his coat pocket. Police said they also found a pill bottle containing two different types of pills in his pocket.

Charges of possession of a controlled substance and paraphernalia, along with the traffic violations, were sent Friday by summons from the office of District Judge Jay Weller.
