State police conducted a “move over” initiative Friday on Interstate 79 to enforce and education motorists on Pennsylvania’s “Steer Clear” law.

During the operation, police issued eight steer clear citations, two speeding citations, two other citations and four warnings.

The law requires motorists to move over or slow down when encountering an emergency scene, traffic stop or disabled vehicle.

Motorists must move their vehicles to a lane that is not adjacent to the scene of the emergency response, police stop or a tow truck picking up an abandoned vehicle. Drivers who cannot move over because of traffic or other conditions must reduce speed.

The law applies anytime an emergency vehicle has its lights flashing and where road crews or emergency personnel have lighted flares, posted signs or tried to warn motorists.

Failure to move over or slow down can result in a fine of up to $250.
