A Jefferson couple has established a new scholarship through the Community Foundation of Greene County.

The Gregory and Mary Lou Niverth Scholarship was established to benefit students graduating from Jefferson-Morgan High School pursuing a degree at an accredited nonprofit, four-year college or university in Pennsylvania.

The first scholarship award of $1,000 will be announced this spring and may be used only for tuition during the recipient’s second year of college.

The Gregory and Mary Lou Niverth Scholarship is for seniors graduating from Jefferson-Morgan High School with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average. Students must be in the top 20th percentile of their class and have an SAT score of at least 1100 and/or an ACT score of at least 20.

Students must demonstrate participation in extracurricular and community service activities. An essay describing school extra-curricular activities and community activities is required along with three letters of recommendation from nonrelatives.

The application and required documents must be submitted to the Jefferson-Morgan Guidance Counselor’s office no later than April 11 for consideration. Copies of the application and full description of the eligibility criteria are available in the Jefferson-Morgan High School Guidance Counselor’s office, as well as on the Community Foundation of Greene County’s website: www.cfgcpa.org.

CFGC Executive Director Bettie Stammerjohn said the Gregory and Mary Lou Niverth Scholarship brings the number of scholarships offered through the foundation to 16. Unlike most scholarships, this grant will be paid to the recipient’s college following the student’s successful completion of freshman year.

“We are excited for this new scholarship and the opportunities it provides for local students,” said Stammerjohn. “Mr. and Mrs. Niverth have carefully considered their desire to help students succeed in college and this scholarship will ensure that happens.”

Call the Community Foundation of Greene County’s office at 724-627-2010 or visit its website at www.cfgcpa.org for more information about the scholarship and others available to Greene County students.
