WAYNESBURG – The Greene County Library System is preparing for its fourth annual Greene County Reading Competition.

The event will be held May 10 at Waynesburg University and all teams must be registered by April 1.

Last year, 21 teams participated from all five Greene County school districts, along with children who use Eva K. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg.

Team are separated into three categories: elementary, middle school and high school. Teams consist of four to eight students who must read assigned books. On the day of the competition, teams answer questions about the books.

Therese Barry, system administrator for Greene County Library System, said they received $500 through a Walmart Community Grant to help with costs this year.

“The event is run on a very minimal budget and relies heavily on the help of volunteers,” she said. “If not for the people who generously donate their time, we would not be able to hold this growing event.”

All schools in Greene County are invited to submit teams. Bowlby Public Library in Waynesburg and Flenniken Public Library in Carmichaels are also forming library teams. Homeschool and cyber school students are also welcome to submit teams.

Book lists and competition information can be found by visiting www.greenecolib.org and clicking the “Greene County Reading Competition” tab.
