Pearl S. Buck’s daughter, who wrote afterword in book, dies
DOYLESTOWN (AP) – A daughter of Nobel Prize-winning author Pearl S. Buck who wrote an afterword to one of her mother’s books has died. Janice Comfort Walsh was 90.
Varcoe-Thomas Funeral Home in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, says Walsh died March 11 of natural causes.
Walsh was one of seven adopted children. The Philadelphia Inquirer says she was moved by a sister’s mental illness to train as an occupational therapist.
Walsh wrote an afterword to her mother’s book “The Child Who Never Grew,” which chronicled the struggles of raising a disabled child.
Walsh served on the board at Pearl S. Buck International and cared for her mother’s National Historic Landmark home outside Philadelphia.
Buck’s novel “The Good Earth” won the Pulitzer Prize in 1932 and helped earn her the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938.
