CARMICHAELS – The PNC Bank branch in Carmichaels was robbed shortly after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, state police said.

Police said a man walked into the bank at 101 S. Vine St. in the borough’s main business district and escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. Investigators did not say if he showed a weapon during the robbery.

Timothy Foster, who lives near the bank, said he was sitting on his back porch when he noticed a black man park a newer-model white Chevrolet Malibu about a block away from the bank.

The man was wearing a tan windbreaker and black sweatpants, but Foster found it suspicious he was also wearing bright blue gloves on his hands and had a navy blue hoodie pulled over his head. The man then went to the passenger’s side seat and sat there for a few moments and “fumbled around” with something, Foster said.

He then got out of the car, walked down an alley near Foster’s house leading to the bank and put what appeared to be a bandanna across his face.

Foster said that made him even more suspicious and he called Greene County 911 emergency dispatchers as the man entered the bank.

“I knew he was robbing the bank,” Foster said.

A few minutes later, the man ran from the bank and back through the alley. Foster momentarily thought about chasing him.

“I was booking after him,” Foster said.

But the man got into his car and drove away before Foster could get closer.

Numerous state troopers rushed to the scene and detectives scoured the parking lot and nearby alley for evidence.

Investigators released few details about the robbery and said they planned to have more information today.
