Coroner IDs man killed in Springhill Township house fire
The Greene County coroner’s office identified the man who died in last week’s Springhill Township house fire.
David Riley, 53, died of smoke inhalation during the March 10 fire inside his home at 498 Moreford Road, the coroner’s office reported.
The state police fire marshal’s office at the Washington barracks said Thursday the cause of the fire is still undetermined because of the amount of damage to the structure, but it is not considered suspicious at this time.
The house was the scene of a shooting June 8 in which Riley shot Jimmy W. Spencer, 53, of New Freeport, in the abdomen after Spencer broke into the house and threatened Riley with a pry bar.
Riley served as a witness against Spencer’s son, Samuel, who entered an “Alford plea” to homicide charges in Wetzel County, W.Va., in February 2015. Samuel was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the homicides.
Jimmy Spencer was sentenced to 2 to 10 years in state prison for entering Riley’s home and attacking him.
