WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners voted unanimously Thursday to add a $5 fee to vehicles registered in the county.

The fee takes effect in July and is in addition to the state’s annual $36 registration cost.

More than 38,000 vehicles are registered in Greene County, meaning the fee will raise nearly $200,000. Officials said the money will likely be used for bridge projects.

The fee is permitted under the state’s Act 89 transportation law passed in 2013. Nearly 10 counties, including Allegheny, have opted to levy the additional $5 fee.

Also Thursday, commissioners agreed to spend $9,567 for the care and maintenance of 3,189 veterans’ graves at 36 cemeteries.

The commissioners also approved of up to $20,000 to assist the Mt. Morris Water and Sewer Authority as it replaces an aging pipeline.

They approved a motion to pay up to $9,000 to EADS Architects Inc. to repair the courthouse porch, which was damaged by bad weather.
