A Dilliner man accused of assisting his brother’s escape from Greene County jail in December was charged with assaulting a U.S. marshal who participated in his arrest.

Shane Hanlan, 29, of 859 Bald Hill Church Road, faces one felony count of assault on a federal officer.

The charge was filed Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Pittsburgh.

Hanlan was arrested Jan. 6 at his home by members of the U.S. Marshal Service Fugitive Task Force.

He was wanted for allegedly helping his brother, Waylon Hanlan, 27, elude capture following Waylon’s escape Dec. 27 from Greene County jail.

Waylon Hanlan was arrested Dec. 29 after state police spotted his car in Dunkard Township while he was riding with Shane and their brother, Clinton Hanlan, state police said.

Waylon and Shane ran from the vehicle. Waylon was apprehended, but Shane eluded police for several more days. Clinton Hanlan fled in the car and was later arrested in West Virginia, police said.

Marshals went to the Hanlan home Jan. 6 and saw Shane Hanlan sleeping on a couch inside, state police said in a criminal complaint regarding Shane’s arrest.

Marshals entered the house and told Shane he was under arrest, but he ran upstairs, broke a window and climbed out to the roof, state police said.

One marshal tried to follow Hanlan out of the window, police said, but he cut his hands on the broken glass.

Hanlan jumped from the roof and ran, but marshals were able to stop him. Police said the marshals “had to use force to physically restrain him,” although they did not elaborate.

The federal charges provide no details regarding the incident but allege Shane Hanlan assaulted, resisted, opposed or impeded federal officers in their duties and injured one of the officers.

Shane Hanlan is scheduled to appear in federal court April 12 for arraignment. He is being held in the Greene County jail on charges of resisting arrest, escape and hindering apprehension.

At the time of his arrest, Shane also was wanted for failing to appear for a pre-sentencing hearing in May for his conviction on receiving stolen property.

Other members of Waylon Hanlan’s family also have been charged in connection with his escape, including Clinton Hanlan, 21, their sister, Vanessa Hanlan, 23, and their father, Hodge Hanlan, 70.
