Police and prison officials are investigating the Thursday death of an inmate at Washington County jail.

Jail Warden John Temas said in a statement Friday inmate Patrick Speer, 44, of Washington, was found unreponsive in his cell bunk at 3:32 p.m. He was taken to Washington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m.

Washington County Coroner Tim Warco said Speer was found by employees making rounds and cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started.

A statement from jail officials said a preliminary investigation yielded no indication of suicide or a crime in Speer’s death. The facility is investigating the matter internally, as are Washington police, officials said.

Warco said the cause and manner of death are pending an autopsy.

Speer was awaiting a trial set for April in Washington County Court in connection with a Washington home invasion. He was facing charges of robbery, persons not to possess a firearm, carrying a firearm without a license, reckless endangerment and conspiracy.

Three inmates died at Washington County jail last year.
