John Corbly DAR honors Greene County students
The John Corbly chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution held a recognition luncheon March 19 at the Hartley Inn in Carmichaels and honored the winners of the DAR’s Good Citizens Award.
The high school seniors were chosen by their schools for their dependability, community service, leadership and patriotism.
Regent Shelvajean Baysinger and chairwoman Charlene Shuckhart presented each student with a certificate, wallet card and pin.
The following students received awards:
Patrick Clites, a student at Mapletown High School and son of Sheila and Rich Clites of Dilliner, is a member of the varsity baseball team, varsity football team, Envirothon team and received the Centennial Chevrolet scholar athlete award.
Clites has also served as vice president of his class for two years and received the Presidential Educational Outstanding Academic Achievement Award.
Sarah Jones, a student at West Greene High School and daughter of Connie and Kurt Jones, is co-captain of the varsity volleyball team, president of the Chemistry Club and Science Club and secretary of the International Club.
Jones received an honorable mention in the Western Pennsylvania Poster Competition and has won awards in the Young Architect Competition.
Desiree Rose, a student at Waynesburg Central High School and daughter of Crystal and John Rose of Waynesburg, is a member of the Alpha Club, the marching band dance team, Raider Review, SADD, Spanish club, student council and president of the LEO Club and National Honor Society.
Rose was honored with awards for Integrated Science, Challenge STEM, Anna G. Meighen World History, Academic Excellence and Bausch + Lomb Honorary Science.
Zachary Shaffer, a student at Jefferson-Morgan High School and son of Brian and Tammy Shaffer of Rices Landing, is a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, LEO Club, Boy Scouts, Science Olympiad, Debate Team, marching band, concert band, varsity baseball and captain of the varsity football team.
Shaffer has been recognized as the student of the month and received the Marge Murray Service Award and President’s Education Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. He was selected a Tri-County South All-Conference Player in 2014 and was the WPIAL Class A ww”Player to Watch” in 2015. Zachary was also an honorable mention for the Pennsylvania State Society of the DAR’s Good Citizens Contest.
