Nemacolin man jailed in kidnap, rape
A Nemacolin man was arrested Sunday and charged with kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old girl over the weekend.
Martin Michael Folan Jr., 20, of 45 Bliss Ave., is accused of kicking open the door of a Cumberland Township home about 5:30 a.m. Saturday and taking the girl. Police said the girl’s mother, who was at the house when Folan showed up, told police Folan was drunk when he arrived.
Folan and the girl’s mother had been dating and recently broke up, according to court documents, but the investigating officer could not be reached Monday to elaborate on that relationship.
Folan allegedly went upstairs, found the girl hiding in a closet and took the screaming girl out of the house, court documents said. Folan threatened the mother would never see her daughter again, according to the court documents. The mother called police, who contacted Verizon to get the location of Folan’s cellphone, which was found in Nemacolin.
According to police, Folan took the girl to his friend’s house in Nemacolin, and when she tried to leave, he shoved her so she could not go home.
Police said the two engaged in sexual intercourse five times and Folan forced the girl to perform sex acts on him multiple times. He also fondled the girl, police said.
The 12-year-old returned home Sunday and told police Folan sexually assaulted her. She was taken to Children’s Hospital of UPMC in Pittsburgh, where a rape kit was conducted.
Police arrested Folan at a Wood Street residence in Nemacolin Sunday. He allegedly admitted to having sex with the girl and participating in other sexual acts with her multiple times, according to court documents. Police said they had an ongoing relationship and exchanged phone messages that were of a “sexual nature.”
But Folan’s mother, Melanie Staley, 39, of Nemacolin, said Monday night he was involved in a romantic relationship with the girl’s 37-year-old mother before it ended last week. Staley said her son went to the house to check on the girl’s well-being, but he denied kidnapping and raping her.
Staley said she and her son exchanged text messages on Saturday after she learned that police suspected him of kidnapping the girl. She said Folan denied those allegations.
“He was like, ‘Mom, I swear on everything, I never touched her,'” Staley said
Police have charged Folan with five counts of rape of a child, five counts of statutory sexual assault, eight counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse with a child, 12 counts of conspiracy, unlawful contact with a minor, burglary, kidnapping, aggravated indecent assault of a child, corruption of minors, indecent assault of a person under 13 years old, indecent exposure and recklessly endangering another person.
Folan was arraigned Sunday by District Judge Lee Watson and is being held at Greene County jail on $250,000 bond. Folan’s preliminary hearing before Watson is scheduled for April 7 at 2:45 p.m.
