Police: Driver tried to lure kids into van
Washington police said the man who was driving a white work van who allegedly tried to lure several children into his vehicle in the 600 block of Beech Street on Sunday has been identified.
The man contacted city police Monday after reports of the incidents surfaced.
Police said the man came into the station Monday. Additional details were not available Monday night, although police did say he contacted them after seeing news reports of the incident.
A mother called police about 8:40 p.m. after her 12-year-old son said that a white, older work van pulled up near him as he was playing outside and the driver offered him candy to get into the van. The boy told the man, “No,” and ran away.
The driver also reportedly approached several other children who were playing basketball behind their home in the same block.
They told police he had been watching them play. He reportedly asked them to get in the van, also offering them candy, but they refused. The driver also reportedly went down the street and approached other children.
Several of the children told police they had seen the van parked in the 600 block of Beech or in an alley behind Beech several times in the past.
Police said they had received several tips throughout the day about the vehicle and driver.
Police said their investigation is continuing.
