Police nab Donora man after chase
A Donora man already wanted on a warrant by Allegheny County police on drug-related charges is in Washington County jail on a charge of flight to avoid apprehension after he allegedly ran from Charleroi Regional police who were investigating a report of a domestic dispute in the borough early Saturday.
Daniel Griffis, 34, of 785 McKean Ave., was taken into custody about 9 a.m. Sunday, the day after Charleroi police were called to an apartment at 604 Fallowfield Ave. for a report of an argument, said police Chief Eric Porter. Police learned Griffis was hiding in the apartment and took him into custody.
Police were called about 1:45 a.m. Saturday for a report of a domestic dispute on First Street. While on their way, police were told to expedite their response. Officers also were told the two people involved, later identified as Griffis and a woman, were walking north in the 200 block of Washington Avenue. Police pulled up next to them. They said the woman stopped, but Griffis continued walking.
When Officer William Gardner got out of his cruiser, Griffis allegedly started running and sped up when Gardner started chasing him.
Police searched several houses in the area, but were not able to locate him.
Griffis’ companion was checked and police learned she was wanted on a non-extraditable warrant in Florida. Police released her after getting her information. Police also checked and learned that Griffis was wanted on a warrant obtained by Allegheny County police earlier this month on charges of criminal use of a communications facility and possession and possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance. The charges stem from a Dec. 22 incident in Glassport.
Griffis was arraigned on the latest charge before District Judge David Mark and placed in Washington County Jail on $50,000 bond. He also is jailed on a state parole violation. Griffis is scheduled for an April 7 preliminary hearing before District Judge Larry Hopkins.
