Pittsburgh schools to hold workshop on transgender plan
PITTSBURGH (AP) – Officials and the public will start talking about a proposed transgender nondiscrimination policy for Pittsburgh’s public schools.
A board committee for the schools plans to hold a workshop Monday night at the city’s Public Schools administration building.
The plan would let students use bathrooms and participate in physical education classes and intramural sports that align with their gender identity. Students would also be addressed by their preferred name and gender pronoun.
Moira Kaleida, District 6 city school director and board policy committee member, tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette a policy walkthrough is planned.
Attorney Matt Sharp, who represents the Alliance Defending Freedom, says the policy infringes on students’ constitutional right to “bodily privacy.”
The board plans to vote on the proposal in late June.
