Community rallies for West Greene softball team

The West Greene varsity softball team was sent off Wednesday afternoon for their WPIAL semifinals playoff game against Monessen with all of the district’s students and staff cheering outside the high school as the team of 19 girls descended the steps and boarded their bus to leave for the game at California University of Pennsylvania. Parents and community members lined the streets with signs and balloons in Rogersville and Waynesburg to cheer on the girls as the bus drove by, escorted by a Center Township fire truck. The WPIAL championship game will be held next Thursday.

The West Greene softball team left for Wednesday afternoon’s WPIAL Class A semifinals playoff game against Monessen with students and staff cheering outside the high school as the team boarded a bus for California University of Pennsylvania. Parents and community members lined the streets with signs and balloons in Rogersville and Waynesburg and the bus was escorted through town by a Center Township fire truck. The Pioneers beat the Greyhounds, 10-0, and will face Chartiers-Houston next Thursday in the WPIAL Class A championship game. For game details, see Page C1.
