Driver dies on I-70
A Claysville woman was killed in a one-vehicle crash Sunday along Interstate 70 east approaching the Chestnut Street interchange.
Washington County Coroner Tim Warco identified the victim as Christina Marie Noel, 37, saying she was pronounced dead at 12:03 p.m. at the scene of the crash in North Franklin Township. The cause and manner of her death were pending further investigation.
State police said Noel was driving a sport utility vehicle when she lost control of it for unknown reasons shortly after 10 a.m.
Her SUV traveled over guardrails on the left side of the roadway and it went airborne, striking a large metal pole supporting an electronic traffic sign in the middle of the median before rolling onto its roof, police said.
Noel, who was not wearing a seat belt, managed to crawl out of her vehicle and died while being treated in an ambulance at the scene of the crash, police said.
Emergency workers summoned a helicopter to the scene before Noel died.
State police said the highway was closed to traffic for about two hours because of the crash. I-70 reopened in the area by 12:30 p.m., police said.
