PITTSBURGH – U.S. Attorney David Hickton is resigning as the federal prosecutor whose office covers Pennsylvania’s 25 westernmost counties.

Hickton was nominated by President Barack Obama in May 2009 and took office after being confirmed by the Senate that August.

There are 93 U.S. Attorneys covering all 50 states and territories. Hickton is one of three in Pennsylvania, the others based in Harrisburg and Philadelphia.

Under Hickton, the office took a more aggressive stance against international cybercriminals and most recently Hickton headed a working group aimed at combatting the heroin and opioid crisis.

Hickton wouldn’t comment beyond a statement saying his tenure “has been the professional privilege of a lifetime and the highlight of my career.”

Hickton, a Democrat, is believed to be the first U.S. Attorney to resign since Republican Donald Trump was elected president.
