Cumberland Twp. close to hiring new police chief
CARMICHAELS – At least four candidates are being considered to become Cumberland Township’s new police chief as officials prepare to make a hire within the month.
The supervisors interviewed five people in the first round of advertising for the position to replace Craig Miller, who submitted his resignation letter in June that stated his final day was supposed to be over the weekend.
Following those interviews, township officials advertised again to gain a larger pool of candidates and received one new application, along with three of the original people. The new candidate will be interviewed soon, Supervisors’ Chairman Bill Groves said.
The supervisors continued their Monday afternoon meeting until Oct. 17, when Groves said they could make a decision on a new chief. If not then, the decision would likely be made at the township’s Nov. 7 meeting.
“We could pull this off by the 17th, possibly,” Groves said. “That’s a big decision.”
Although Miller originally planned to leave his position last Saturday, he said Monday he will continue working as chief until the supervisors hire his replacement. He plans to remain in the department in a different capacity and will continue to work as the department’s canine handler.
“I’m willing to stay (as chief) as long as they are still looking for a new chief,” Miller said.
Also during the meeting, the supervisors voted to appoint David Eitner as the township auditor to replace Tom Simkovic, who moved out of the area.
The supervisors also set trick-or-treat for Sunday, Oct. 30, from 4 to 6 p.m.
