The annual hike through the Mason-Dixon Historical Park later this month will serve as a time for organizers and the community to discuss celebratory plans for next year’s 250th anniversary of the end of the historical Mason-Dixon survey.

Pete Zapadka, a park volunteer, said this year’s event will begin around 10:30 a.m. Oct. 16 in the parking lot next to the park’s red barn off Buckeye Road, near Core, W.Va.

Doug Wood of Nitro, W.Va., will begin the event with a presentation about Cherokee leader Ostenaco in the 1700s. The presentation is part of the History Alive! Program of the West Virginia Humanities Council and will also feature re-enactors.

“(Wood) does this presentation to give the flavor of what our area was back then,” Zapadka said.

Zapadka said the group will then discuss what events will commemorate the 250th anniversary next year during the three-day event from Oct. 13 to 15 called Mason-Dixon 250 in 2017.

“We have a lot of things planned but that takes money and fundraising, so we’re trying to do that now,” he said. “We’re looking for any help we can get.”

After the discussion, Zapadka will guide the group on a 1 1/2-mile hike along Dunkard Creek, with the option to climb Brown’s Hill.

“The annual hike will be part of the celebration next year, too but we’ll obviously make a bigger deal of it,” Zapadka said.

“We can’t let this fade into history.”
