3 min read

Greene County Department of Recreation will be offering programs on pastry and cake decorating, jewelry making and essential oils beginning this month at Greene County Fairgrounds. Pre-registration is required a day in advance of classes because of space availability.

Creative Pastries with instructor Von Lee begins at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 13, with subsequent classes held on Sept. 20 and 27 in the lower level of Building No. 10.

The class will focus on building the skills necessary for the perfect pie crust including crimping, creating appliques and building lattice crusts for luscious fruit pies or hearty savory pies. Coffee will be served at the end of each class to enjoy the finished product. Each one-hour class builds upon the previous week’s topic. The fee is $20 per class and includes supplies.

Lee will also lead a series of cake decorating classes on Wednesdays beginning at 6 p.m. Sept. 14 in the lower level of Building No. 10. The emphasis will be on basic buttercream techniques and six simple to-pipe flowers that transform ordinary cakes and treats to extraordinary creations.

To pursue professional cake designs, an advanced follow-up class will be held Sept. 21. Aprons are optional and participants will need to supply a small to medium size container. The fee is $20 per class and includes the remaining supplies. The class series is offered again Oct. 19 and 26.

A two-hour creative jewelry making class will be held weekly on Sundays with instructor Angel Boyle beginning Sept. 18 in the upper level of Building No.10. Participants will design different types of jewelry to take home. Topics will include creating patterns and designs, peyote stitch, beading and stitching techniques to add drama and flare. The class fee is $20 per week and includes materials. The class series ends Oct. 9.

Boyle will also teach one-hour creative jewelry making classes at 6 p.m. Mondays beginning Sept. 19 through Oct. 31 in Building No. 9. Class will not be held Oct. 10 because of the Columbus Day holiday.

Participants will make earrings or bracelets and explore basic beading techniques. Topics also include adding bling with Swarovski Crystals and gem stones, crimping techniques and a variety of bead structures. The $10 fee per week includes materials. Adults and mature children are welcome.

“Essential Yours – Natural Solutions for a Healthier You” led by Kelley Mackey will introduce participants to essential oils and provide additional methods each week for using oils in everyday life. The one-hour class is held Thursdays at 6 p.m.from Sept. 22 through Oct. 27 in the upper level of Building No. 10. The class fee is $5 per week and includes a make-and-take project with samples. Participants may also win weekly prizes.

Classes may be canceled because of participation or inclement weather. Announcements will be made on WANB radio. For more information or registration, call the Department of Recreation at 724-852-5323, or visit www.co.greene.pa.us.
