Monongahela historical society hosting old-style auction
MONONGAHELA – A charity auction Saturday in a Monongahela park will take bidders back in time in a Colonial Williamsburg-style version of living history.
The Monongahela Area Historical Society will have volunteers wearing period costumes mingling with bidders rather than simply having guests sitting on benches competing to purchase antiques and collectibles in the city’s quaint Chess Park.
“It’s not going to be your typical auction,” said Carol Frye, the society’s treasurer.
She said society members were inspired to hold such an auction after seeing one at Colonial Williamsburg, the restored 18th century Virginia capital of Britain’s empire in the New World.
“We’re giving it a whirl,” Frye said.
The noon auction will follow a 9:15 a.m. performance of the program “History Through a Woman’s Eye,” where historical re-enactors will tell the stories of prominent Monongahela women of previous generations.
“History is traditionally told through a man’s prospective,” Frye said. Tickets for the performance can be reserved by calling 724-258-2377.
The items for sale at the Ye Olde Auction on the Green will be on preview at 11 a.m. in the park in the 600 block of West Main Street.
Among the donated items that will be sold are furniture, old bottles and tin-type photographs. Bidders are expected to bring their own chairs.
