Evan Bundash, 18, stands outside the window of the living room of his family’s Bentleyville home, where a fire is believed to have started early Friday.

Evan Bundash said he was sleeping in a second-floor bedroom of his home at 202 Johnston Road in Bentleyville when he woke up to screams from family members that the house was on fire.

The 18-year-old was one of three family members rescued from the roof over his grandparents’ bedroom by Bentleyville firefighters. He and with his sister, Anna Bundash; mother and father, Megan and Sidney Moyer; and grandparents, David and Patricia Owens, were in the house when the fire broke out about 3:45 a.m. All six were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, said Ron Sicchitano Jr., Bentleyville first assistant fire chief

“The smoke was not thick at first, but then poof, it got really bad,” Bundash said. “I thought, ‘Oh, God, I am going to die.'”

Bundash said the family’s three cats died in the fire.

When crews arrived, there was heavy smoke and fire coming from a living room window on the first floor, Sicchitano said. The fire, which is believed to have started in that area, was contained to the living room area, but the rest of the house had smoke damage, he added.

The source of the fire appeared to have been electrical, Sicchitano said. A state police fire marshal ruled the fire was accidental.

Bentleyville was assisted at the scene by firefighters from Cokeburg, Richeyville and Fallowfield Township. California Fire Department Rapid Intervention Team also was at the scene. American Red Cross is assisting the family.
