Couple charged in assault on police
A Washington man was arrested and his girlfriend faces charges after they allegedly assaulted city police who responded to their Jefferson Avenue home Wednesday afternoon for a report of a domestic dispute.
Brandon M. Greer, 23, of 395 Jefferson, was arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger on charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Amanda Andrews, 21, also of 395 Jefferson, also was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest. She will be arraigned at a later date.
Cpl. Jack Hancock was working a detail at a Columbia Gas Co. construction site in the area about 1 p.m. when a flagger alerted him a woman was yelling for help.
Hancock knocked on the door at 395 Jefferson. Greer reportedly opened the door holding a claw hammer and told Hancock he was not coming into his house. Hancock then told Greer to step outside, but he refused, telling Hancock if he wanted to come in, he needed a warrant.
Greer reportedly then raised the claw hammer, so Hancock grabbed the other man and the two started fighting. Andrews reportedly jumped on Hancock’s back and also on Officer Kent Mitchell, who arrived to assist, causing both officers to fall. When Officers Johnathan Miller and Joseph Moore arrived, they were able to take Andrews into custody. Police said Greer continued to struggle as they tried to place him in handcuffs.
Greer and Andrews were taken to Washington Hospital for treatment. Neither Hancock nor Mitchell was injured, police said.
Greer is in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. He is scheduled for a May 8 preliminary hearing before Redlinger.
