Two people were taken by helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital following a head-on collision Wednesday in Union Township.

A Washington County 911 dispatch supervisor said both patients were taken to UPMC Presbyterian. The two-vehicle accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of Route 88.

Assistant Chief David Kegel of Finleyville Volunteer Fire Department described the victims’ injuries as serious. One of them was trapped in each of the two vehicles involved – which Kegel described as a sedan and a pickup truck – when firefighters arrived. They were extricated and were flown by medical helicopter from Finleyville Airport.

The patients’ names, their ages and other details weren’t immediately available. Monongahela police did not immediately return a call seeking more information.

Elrama Voluneer Fire Department and Jefferson Hills Area Ambulance Association also responded, Kegel said.
