Canon-McMillan School Board appointed a new director at its Aug. 17 meeting.

Mary Kline was selected to serve through Dec. 4.

Kline fills the vacant seat left open when board member Paul Scarmazzi submitted his resignation, which was accepted effective Aug. 17.

Kline was approved by a 5-0 vote, and was sworn in following the vote.

Kline’s father, the late Eric Kline, served multiple terms on the school board.

In other business, the board accepted a donation of $23,343 from Horizon Foundation that will be used for the high school’s Student Store initiative, and a $7,000 donation from Washington County Community Foundation for the purchase of varsity cheerleading tumbling mats.

The board also approved a $20,000 job training and education programs grant from the state Department of Education for the Code to the Future, a computer science immersion initiative designed to prepare students for high-demand technology jobs.

Directors also acknowledged Wylandville Elementary School principal Nina Unitas for receiving the 2017 Pennsylvania Art Education Association Outstanding Supervision/Administration Art Educator Award. The award recognizes exemplary contributions, achievements and service to art education at the state, regional and national levels.
