Washington teen arraigned on attempted homicide, assault charges in shooting
An 18-year-old Washington man was arraigned Tuesday on charges filed by Washington police in the July 21 shooting of a teenage girl in the city’s West End.
Jamil Carr, 18, of 782 Broad St., was arraigned before District Judge Robert Redlinger on two counts each of attempted homicide and aggravated assault. Detective Sgt. Rob Aiello said Carr was taken into custody over the weekend during an incident in Kittanning, Armstrong County.
Carr, the Washington girl and her brother were among several people who reportedly got into an argument in a parking lot in the 500 block of Fayette Street on the afternoon of July 21. Carr allegedly fired a gun, hitting the girl in the right arm and shoulder. Police said Carr fled after the shooting. Officers found five shell casings at the scene.
The girl was taken to Washington Hospital for treatment of two gunshot wounds. While she was being treated, she reportedly told police Carr had shot her.
Aiello said the three were familiar with one another, and Carr and the victim’s brother reportedly had a prior disagreement.
Carr was taken into custody by Kittanning police Sunday after he allegedly broke into an apartment formerly occupied by a female acquaintance, according to published reports.
When police and the owner of the apartment arrived, they found the door was broken off its hinges and had been set back in place. Police said they could see marijuana through an opening in the door and arrested Carr for possession. Carr allegedly gave police two false names in an attempt to hide his identity. He was taken to the state police barracks in Kittanning, where his identity was determined and it was found he was wanted on the attempted homicide and assault charges.
Carr was placed in Armstrong County jail until he could be transported to Washington County. Kittanning police will charge him with false identification to police and drug offenses, according to the report.
Carr was placed in Washington County jail Tuesday on $100,000 bond set by Redlinger. He is scheduled for a Sept. 11 hearing before Redlinger.
