North Strabane Township police said it is amazing there were not more people hurt Saturday night when a pickup truck smashed through the front window of a Racetrack Road fast-food restaurant, hitting three customers and an employee.

Sgt. Matt Mancini said the truck just missed a family of four, including two boys, who were sitting at a table inside Wendy’s about 8:20 p.m.

“The dad said he thought a bomb went off,” Mancini said. “The truck missed them by inches.”

A pickup truck sits inside the Wendy’s restaurant on Racetrack Road following a multivehicle accident Saturday night.

Mancini described the scene as chaotic.

Three members of a family ordering food at the counter were injured when they were struck by the truck driven by Brian C. Reeves, 26, of North Strabane Township. Jose Santos Caballero, 54, his wife, Desiree Caballero-Vargas, 56, and their 26-year-old son, Marvin Caballero, all of Canonsburg, were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, along with the clerk who was waiting on them, Jonathan Megarry, 32, of Washington. Megarry was thrown into an ice machine.

Mancini said the truck pushed the tables, chairs and counters into the kitchen. Jose Santos Caballero was thrown over the counter into the kitchen, scattering debris. Emergency personnel had to move debris to get to the victims.

Reeves told police he was involved in a crash at the intersection of Racetrack Road and Meadowlands Boulevard as he was going west on Racetrack.

He said the gas pedal on his truck got stuck in the initial crash, causing him to lose control of the truck, veer over the median into the eastbound lanes and crash into the building.

The drivers of the other two vehicles involved in the initial crash were identified as Russell M. Greene, 62, of Pittsburgh, and Josephine Mastilak, 55, of Moon Township.

Police are continuing their investigation.
