Two houses, one in Washington and another in Canonsburg, were hit by several bullets late Wednesday and early Thursday.

A 20-year-old woman was in her 1-year-old daughter’s bedroom in their home in the 700 block of Fayette Street in Washington when she heard the sound of gunfire about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The woman told police she heard the sound of four gunshots in succession, with a brief pause before two more shots rang out from the back of her residence.

Four of the shots entered her home. Three entered through a sliding glass door and went through the curtains before striking a refrigerator. Two of the bullets were lodged in the freezer door, while a third was found in the lower corner of the right side of the refrigerator. A fourth bullet went through the siding of the house to the right of the sliding glass door. That bullet went through a wall and a plastic tote basket but was not recovered by police.

Police said one shell casing was found in a parking area at the rear of the residence, on top of a woodpile.

The woman told police she lived in the house for only about 10 days. She moved to the area about a month ago from San Diego. She also told police earlier in the day, the gate and fence at the back of the house had been broken.

Police will check to see if there are surveillance cameras in the area.

Canonsburg police received multiple calls about 12:05 a.m. Thursday about gunshots being heard in the 100 block of Murdock Street. A sport utility vehicle was reportedly seen fleeing the area.

When police arrived, they found four shell casings on the sidewalk in front of the house that had been hit by the gunfire. The residents of the house had been in the basement when the shots were fired.

Chief Al Coghill said the house was hit, but none of the bullets went into the home. He said police are investigating the report of an argument that happened on the sidewalk near the house earlier Wednesday night to determine if it had anything to do with the shooting.
