It wasn’t a grocery store aisle, but a North Strabane Township street where three people were found riding a motorized shopping cart Friday night.

One of them faces theft charges after he allegedly admitted to stealing the cart earlier in the day from Giant Eagle at Donaldson’s Crossroads shopping center in Peters Township.

North Strabane police Officer Michael Miller was dispatched about 11:45 p.m. to the area of Hunting Creek Road and Cricketwood Court in the Glencannon housing plan for a report of three people on an electric wheelchair on Hunting Creek.

When Miller arrived in the 400 block of Hunting Creek, he found three people riding what appeared to be an electric shopping cart. Two were sitting on the seat while the third was sitting in the basket at the front of the cart, which was going up a hill very slowly. When they spotted the police cruiser behind them, the operator pulled to the side of the road.

When Miller asked where they got the shopping cart, Devin Stevenson, 21, of 206 Weavertown Road, North Strabane, answered he got it from the Craigslist website. Miller saw a Giant Eagle barcode on the cart, which had been stolen a few hours earlier.

Stevenson reportedly admitted to Miller he stole the cart and his two friends, a 21-year-old North Strabane man and 24-year-old North Franklin Township woman, had nothing to do with the theft.

Peters Township police contacted store personnel, who indicated they wanted to prosecute. Peters police Chief Douglas Grimes said Monday the investigation is continuing. Police are waiting to determine the value of the cart and what charges could be filed.

It is not known how the shopping cart got to the Glencannon area. A flatbed tow truck was called to return the cart to Giant Eagle.
