Washington woman arrested, accused of trying to disarm city police officer
A Washington woman was arrested Wednesday night on charges including disarming a police officer after she allegedly tried to take a city officer’s duty weapon while she was in custody at the police station.
Michelle Sweeney, 36, of 490 Glenn St., also is charged with resisting arrest, four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.
Police were called about 7:25 p.m. for a report of a disturbance at the 50 Yard Line bar, 105 Henderson Ave. Employees pointed out Sweeney to officers, telling them she had been screaming obscenities at them and patrons.
Sweeney also was accused of threatening to kill an employee and throwing an ashtray at the worker, just missing her head.
Officers approached Sweeney, and she immediately started yelling racial slurs at them, police said. When Lt. Robert Lemons and Officer Joseph Moore tried to remove her from the bar, she allegedly twice spit in Moore’s face and had to be physically restrained.
Sweeney reportedly resisted officers’ attempts to arrest her and had to be pulled into the police cruiser when she again tried to spit on Moore.
While being escorted into the police station, she allegedly tried to spit on Officer Matthew Karlowsky but missed and instead hit paperwork.
She then allegedly grabbed Karlowsky’s service firearm, which was holstered to his belt, in an apparent attempt to disarm him.
While in the holding cell, Sweeney allegedly continued to threaten the lives of the officers and their families, telling them she would kill all of them.
Sweeney was arraigned before District Judge Joshua Kanalis and placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond. She is scheduled for a Jan. 3 preliminary hearing before District Judge Robert Redlinger.
