Charleroi school property sales hearing set
The Charleroi Area School District, which will be transfering two pieces of property to the Mon Valley Alliance for $1 each, will have its day in Washington County Court.
Petitioning the court were Charleroi School District solicitors Keith A. Bassi and Todd Pappasergi, attorneys with Bassi, Vreeland and Associates, school district solicitor.
Judge Damon Faldowski has scheduled a hearing on the sale of the Atlas Building, 138 McKean Ave., and the old stadium property, 200 Second St., for 1:30 p.m. March 22.
A 1949 state law requires the school board to petition the court to approve the private sale of “unused and unnecessary lands and buildings” to determine if the price offered is fair and reasonable and that a better price could not be obtained at public sale.
The Atlas Building has been described in news accounts as both large and crumbling. Because of the collapse of its roof, it is considered a hazard to public safety and it is to be demolished.
The school district was given the Atlas Building in 2011 to be included in a plan to market the property with the old stadium. Mon Valley Alliance, an economic development group, plans to use the stadium property to provide the borough with recreation and a better connection to the Monongahela River.
