Portions of Franklin Farms Road were closed Wednesday morning as crews worked to remove a large pine tree that came down during high winds late Tuesday night. The tree fell across both lanes of the road in the 500 block, knocking out electrical power in the area.

Strong winds that swept through the area late Tuesday downed trees and caused power outages throughout Washington and Greene counties.

A portion of Franklin Farms Road in North Franklin Township was closed Wednesday morning as crews worked to remove a large pine tree that came down. The tree fell across both lanes of the road in the 500 block, knocking out electrical power in the area. The road reopened about noon Wednesday.

A West Penn Power spokesman reported at one point, about power 1,500 customers in Washington and Greene counties were without power. It had been restored to all but a few by late Wednesday morning.

Bentworth High School canceled classes because of a power outage.

Lee Hendricks, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said wind gusts of 35 mph were reported at the Washington County Airport and 46 mph at Pittsburgh International Airport. The winds, accompanied a cold front that swept in overnight, caused some icy spots on roads.

Numerous crashes were reported around Washington County early Wednesday due to black ice. No serious accidents were reported.
