It’s been a busy news week in Washington and Greene counties and the Mon Valley. If you haven’t had the chance to catch up on all the local news from the area, we have you covered with this collection of the five most-read stories from the Observer-Reporter’s website this week.

The father of a man who fatally stabbed a police K-9 and was shot and killed by officers in Allegheny County last year was struck by a vehicle in Washington Wednesday evening.

Bruce Kelley Sr., 61, of Wilkinsburg, was crossing the northbound lanes of Jefferson Avenue about 6 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Jonathan Imhoff, 26, of McKeesport, who was turning left onto Jefferson from Chestnut Street.

Kelley’s son, Bruce Kelley Jr., was shot and killed Jan. 31 by Port Authority of Allegheny County police after he stabbed and killed Aren, a 5-year-old German shepherd. Authorities said the Kelleys were drinking alcohol in a busway gazebo in Wilkinsburg before the shooting.

Bruce Kelley Sr., who has ties to the Washington area, is facing charges including aggravated assault for allegedly fighting with officers during the Jan. 31 confrontation.

A former part-time Donora police officer was arrested Tuesday on charges he stole 133 stamp bags of heroin from the patrol room while he worked there in August.

The state police organized crime task force arrested James Bowman Johnson V, 29, of 2202 Walch St., Carroll Township, on a string of charges accusing him of slipping the drugs under his bulletproof vest Aug. 11 and placing them into his patrol bag and then his personal vehicle, court records show.

Rostraver Township has given its approval to a Bethel Park woman’s plans to open a medical marijuana growing and processing plant in the Mon Valley municipality.

The township’s zoning hearing board Wednesday granted an exemption to the local ordinance giving Corinne Ogrodnik permission to conduct light industry in an area zoned for commercial purposes under the business name of Maitri Medicinals.

A Burgettstown man was arrested Tuesday night on drug charges after state police reportedly found him with a large amount of suspected marijuana during a traffic stop on the ramp from Interstate 70 east at Jefferson Avenue in Washington.

Daniel J. Dailey, 25, of 105 Bell Ave., was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped about 9:20 p.m. A trooper saw the front seat passenger, identified as Dailey, open the window and throw a substance out of the vehicle. Dailey was found with a large bag of suspected marijuana in the pocket of his hooded shirt. Police also found a white, powdery substance on Dailey’s jeans and hands and on the passenger seat, door and floorboard. Police also found a plastic bag with white residue and two corners cut from a plastic bag.

About 200 coal industry employees and their supporters, including a number of miners from CONSOL Energy’s Bailey Mine, staged a peaceful protest Monday in front of the offices of Center for Coalfield Justice in Washington.

The rally, staged by the Secure Energy for America Association, was a result of a recent hearing on a petition filed by CCJ and the Sierra Club seeking to stop CONSOL’s Bailey Mine from mining beneath two streams in and adjacent to Ryerson Station State Park in Greene County.
