An Allegheny County man was arrested Friday afternoon by Washington County sheriff’s deputies after he allegedly was found with a stolen gun during a traffic stop.

Trevon Dereese Stewart, 22, of Sharpsburg, was spotted about 3:15 p.m. by Deputies Dan McMurtrie and Ron Catrain as he turned from Baltimore Avenue to West Maiden Street, driving a vehicle with a taillight out and expired registration.

Catrain said they stopped the vehicle. Stewart, who is originally from Washington and still has family in the area, got out and started walking back to the deputies’ cruiser after being told multiple times to stay in his vehicle, Catrain said. When Stewart turned back toward his vehicle, he allegedly started running down West Maiden in the direction of Jefferson Avenue, where he was caught by the deputies. Catrain said Stewart struggled with them as they took him into custody.

McMurtrie retraced Stewart’s steps back to the vehicle. The door was open, and McMurtrie said he spotted a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun. The deputies traced the gun, and the owner said it was stolen earlier this month, but he had not contacted police about the theft.

Washington police assisted the deputies.

Stewart was arraigned before District Judge Gary Havelka on charges of firearms not to be carried without a license, receiving stolen property, resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension, as well as traffic violations. He was placed in Washington County jail on $10,000 bond.
