A Burgettstown man was charged Wednesday by a Pennsylvania Game Commission officer with game law violations stemming from an incident earlier this month in Smith Township.

Shawn W. Abbott, 42, of 1031 Route 18, is charged with unlawful killing of big game and other violations. Game officers received an anonymous tip about two deer found along a trail off Wilden Road in Smith. Deer hair and blood were found along a trail just off Wilden.

Investigators with the Game Commission said they interviewed Abbott and learned that he shot both deer with a shotgun outside of hunting season. He also allegedly admitted to taking a relative’s antlerless deer tag without permission and putting it on one of the deer.

The charges will be sent by summons from the office of District Judge Gary Havelka.
