Police: Pair broke into Washington pawn shop
A Washington man was arrested and a South Strabane Township woman charged after the two allegedly broke into a Washington pawn shop early Wednesday.
William L. Strawn, 53, of 885 Grove Ave., and Kimberly Kover, 28, of 1176 Bruce St., were taken into custody shortly after the burglary was reported at Zawacki’s Pawn Shop, 159 N. Main St.
Washington police were called to the shop about 12:40 p.m. for a report of a burglary. The rear door to the business had been pried open. The owner responded and told police he had a surveillance camera on that door.
After reviewing the video, police could see a man and woman approach the rear door from Spruce Alley. The man used a metal pry bar to open the door, police said. The two entered the building. A few minutes later, they were seen running from the building down Spruce.
Police said the man was wearing a dark jacket, jeans and white tennis shoes. The woman was wearing a light-colored, hooded sweatshirt. The area was searched. Strawn and Kover, who were wearing clothing that matched that of the suspects’, were found in the 100 block of Highland Avenue.
Kover reportedly admitted to police in a written statement the two had burglarized the pawn shop. The pry bar was found inside a truck Strawn had driven, parked behind another North Main business. Strawn’s daughter, who owns the truck, reported an unauthorized use of the truck to Canonsburg police about 8:15 p.m. Tuesday, telling them she let her father use it but he would not return the truck. Washington police impounded the truck.
Strawn was arraigned before District Judge James Ellis on charges of burglary, loitering and prowling at night, possessing instruments of a crime and theft. He was placed in Washington County jail on $50,000 bond as well as a state parole violation. Kover, who was released, will be arraigned at a later date on charges of burglary and loitering and prowling at night filed against her at the office of District Judge Robert Redlinger.
