East Washington council member resigns at meeting

East Washington Borough Council member Chris Mascara submitted his resignation Monday.
Council voted 4-3 to accept the resignation, with regret, with Mayor Michael Gomber breaking the tie.
Mascara’s resignation was effective immediately.
The board then, by a 5-1 vote, appointed Jerry Cypher to complete Mascara’s term, which runs until January 2018.
Cypher joins his son, Councilman Jerad Cypher, on the board.
Council also accepted the resignation of code enforcement officer Cheryl Mascara, who is the wife of Chris Mascara, and approved appointing Gerald Coleman as code enforcement officer for between 20 and 35 hours per week at a salary of $20 an hour. No reason was given for the resignations.
In another matter, First Energy manager of external affairs Randy Durr presented a cost savings fact sheet to the borough to convert its high pressure sodium streetlight to LED streetlights, which would result in electric savings of approximately $945 per month.
Durr said the LED lights are more efficient than the borough’s current lights, and come with a 10-year warranty.
Because of the demand for LED lights in local municipalities, the streetlight conversion project – which would include more than 120 streetlights – likely would not begin until late 2018 if the board approves it, Durr said.
