WAYNESBURG – Greene County commissioners hired an architect Thursday to oversee a project that will include making minor repairs to the courthouse clock tower and giving the building’s exterior trim a fresh coat of paint.

EADS Architects Inc. was hired at a cost of $11,100 to oversee work that also will include repairing plaster on the front columns and installing new metal spikes on the capitals at the top of the columns to deter pigeons from nesting there.

Repairs are needed on the sub-structure at the base of the courthouse bell tower, where the wood has rotted as a result of past water infiltration, chief clerk Jeff Marshall said.

The problem of water infiltration had apparently been corrected during past restoration work, he said.

EADS earlier had been asked to prepare the bid specifications for the project at a cost of $19,800.

Marshall said the work is expected to go out for bid next month and be completed in the fall. The county will use Act 13 impact fee money to pay for the project.

The commissioners also awarded a contract for bus transportation for the summer youth day camp program, which will run from June 19 through July 28.

Buses will transport participants from pickup sites in Jefferson, Nemacolin, Bobtown and Nineveh to the camps, which are held at Lions Club Park, Wana B Park, Mon View Park and Ryerson Station State Park.

The contract was awarded to Mlaker Bus Service of Brownsville, which submitted a low bid of $18,920.

The day camp program is for ages 5 to 15 and is funded each year through donations from corporations, organizations and individuals.

The commissioners also awarded a contract to upgrade portable radios for the sheriff’s department. Sheriff Brian Tenant had received a grant for the new equipment, Marshall said.

The contract went to Discount Two-Way Radio of Rancho Dominguez, Calif. The company submitted a low bid of $10,024.

Commissioners also approved a contract to purchase a new intercom system for the Greene County jail at a cost of $24,154. The system was purchased through the state co-star bidding program.
