National Aviary in Pittsburgh holds their own “Penguins” victory parade
PITTSBURGH – On Thursday, June 15th, The National Aviary celebrated the Pittsburgh Penguins’ back-to-back Stanley Cup championship with a victory parade featuring African Penguins.
To the strains of celebratory music, members of the National Aviary’s team of African Penguins followed a Stanley Cup replica float through the National Aviary’s main hallway. The parade was led by National Aviary Executive Director Cheryl Tracy and Support Space Manager Greg Monroe who pulled the wheeled, black and gold float that donned a shining, miniature Stanley Cup replica. National Aviary staff, dressed in their best Pittsburgh Penguins attire, joined the parade among the African Penguins!
Visitors enjoyed taking photos and seeing the African Penguins up-close as they paraded through the main hall, around the corner, and back into Penguin Point where they rejoined their colony and fellow teammates – some of whom have Pittsburgh Penguins inspired names, like Sidney, Patrick (a throwback to the Patrick Division), Stanley (as in cup), and Slippy (a Pittsburghese favorite). The last penguin to complete the parade route was Elvis. The crowd cheered as it was announced that Elvis had left the building!
