Inmate awarded $300K for alleged abuse at county jail
PITTSBURGH (AP) – An inmate at a Pennsylvania state prison who said he was abused at a county jail more than a decade ago has been awarded nearly $300,000 by a federal jury.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports that Andre Jacobs had originally sued 25 people alleging retaliation, excessive force and violation of due process at the Allegheny County Jail in 2005 and 2006. He was asking for $5 million in damages.
Some of his claims were dismissed, and on others the jury ruled against him. But they found in his favor on claims against the county, the former warden, the former deputy warden, a county police officer and several guards.
The county’s lawyer says he is still considering an appeal.
Jacobs is currently incarcerated at the state prison in Albion.
