Carmichaels Area and Central Greene school districts will be raising taxes this coming school year.

Central Greene narrowly approved its budget with a 5-4 vote from the board at its Thursday night meeting. Because the budget has $33.85 million in expenses and only $33.6 million in revenue, the board also approved the transfer of $291,420 from the fund balance to make up the difference.

The budget will increase the property tax rate by 0.8491 mills, taking the total millage to 28.2420. Business manager Jim Shargots said the increase will cost the owner of a home assessed at $50,000 an additional $42 annually.

Board members Rachael Shultz, Sarah Hughes, John Bristor and Bridget Montgomery were the four members who voted against the final budget, as they did when it was approved as a proposed budget in May.

Also Thursday night, Carmichaels approved its $16.87 million budget for the 2017-18 school year, with a total property tax rate of 25.13 mills, an increase of 0.89 mills. The increase will cost the owner of a home assessed at $50,000 an additional $44.50 annually, according to Julie Mascia, Carmichaels’ business manager.

Mascia said one of the reasons for the increase is they recently “did complete renovations of our campus,” which began in 2012. She said the increase will help offset those debt payments.

Mascia said it was a unanimous vote of the seven members who were present.
