Section of Route 980 closed by wreck for hours

A section of Route 980 in Canonsburg was closed for about eight hours after a vehicle struck a utility pole late Sunday.
Canonsburg police said a 2016 Toyota Highlander struck a telephone pole with its mirror near Peach Alley then continued traveling down Route 980. The vehicle then struck a second pole in the 300 block of the road, breaking it in two, shortly before midnight.
Police said the collision brought down wires, including high-tension power lines, in the road.
At least two neighbors reported the service lines running to their houses also were pulled down. One of them reported a chandelier in his house broke because it was pulled up into his ceiling.
The road in the area was closed until between 8 and 8:30 a.m. as workers from West Penn Power performed repairs.
The driver – who allegedly showed signs of intoxication, had vomit on herself and admitted to medical personnel she’d been drinking wine – was taken to Canonsburg Hospital, where she consented to a blood draw.
A possible charge of driving under the influence is pending the blood test results, police said.
Mayor David Rhome, also an assistant borough fire chief, said Canon-McMillan School District rerouted its buses in the morning to avoid the scene of the accident. He said most motorists from the surrounding area heeded word about the closure and found alternate routes in the morning.
“We put it out there the road was closed due to an accident,” he said. “People paid attention, did everything that we asked.”
