Attorneys in the case of a man charged with homicide and attempted homicide emerged from a status conference at the Washington County Courthouse Monday with information about a related case.

Brandon Lee Wolowski, 22, of Washington, who is also charged with an aggravated assault of a fellow prisoner at the Washington County jail, could stand trial this summer.

“We’d be looking for global resolution of that charge with the homicide charge,” said Wolowski’s court-appointed attorney, Noah Geary.

Wolowski was first charged with aggravated assault and robbery in connection with shootings at a home in the 900 block of Fayette Street, in Washington’s West End neighborhood, on Jan. 8, 2013.

Matthew Mathias, 37, died of a gunshot wound to the chest that perforated his left lung. Mathias’ girlfriend, Michelle Powell, 38, was shot in the cheek, chin, chest and arm but survived after undergoing surgery. Theft of guns was said to be the objective of the robbery. The prosecution has formally notified the court that Wolowski could face the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder by a jury.

The second set of charges stem from an assault that took place Oct. 13 of that year, when Wolowski is accused of injuring a fellow inmate in an unprovoked attack. The victim required stitches and staples to close head and hand wounds.

Judge John DiSalle has been assigned to preside over Wolowski’s cases. Assistant District Attorney Leslie Ridge said the next court date is a pretrial conference scheduled for early June.Washington County has a single week of possible jury trials during the week of July 10.
